In May 2009 inaugural foundation21 Parents Retreat was attended. Parents had a chance to relax, have fun and learn together, in the beautiful surrounds of the Barossa Valley.

Guest speakers informed the group on topics such as planning for the financial future of our kids, education, and speech – with the highlight of the weekend being a presentation by Tammy Lane – a young lady who has Down syndrome, and spoke about her remarkable achievements in life so far – and she is only 22 years old!

Of course there was also a chance for some R & R and the Flying Fox over Cudlee Creek sent the adrenalin pumping…

 Buddy Walk® was established to promote awareness and inclusion for people of all ages with Down syndrome during October, National Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

It is a wonderful, heart-warming event that celebrates the many abilities and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome.

Buddy Walk ® plays a key role in helping raise funds for the development of educational and health support programs such as speech therapy for children and young adults with Down syndrome.

The Buddy Walk ® sponsorship program allows all participants, to receive some fantastic rewards as a thank you for taking part.

A GOOD START FOR CHILDREN WITH DOWN SYNDROME

Prime Minister Julia Gillard today announced the Better Start for Children with Disability Initiative which will ensure children with a disability have greater access to early intervention therapies and services.

More than 7000 children diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome and vision or hearing impairments will now be eligible to receive up to $12,000 for early intervention services such speech pathology, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

Children with Down syndrome under the age of 13 years old will also be eligible for Medicare rebates on up to 20 allied health visits per year.

“Every child deserves the very best start in life including children with Down syndrome,” said Catherine McAlpine, Executive Officer of Down Syndrome Victoria.

“This package will ensure children with Down syndrome receive the support they need to reach their full potential and become active contributing members of their families and the community,

“There is now ample evidence to demonstrate that investing in early intervention yields enormous benefits in the long run.

“Until now many families have been struggling to meet the cost of these important therapies out of their own pockets. If parents cannot pay then children miss out and the opportunity is lost.

“This announcement will provide welcome relief to many families and ensure every child with Down syndrome has the opportunity of receiving the many benefits of early intervention.”

The Liberal Party announced a policy and funding package for students with disabilities yesterday (Friday 30th July) as part of its election campaign. Click here to read the full announcement on the Liberal Party’s website.

The Coalition will invest $314 million to provide greater support to students with a disability and their families.
